Materials and Craftsmanship

A premium chess board is born from the union of noble woods and traditional veneer work. Chess Chivalry favours maple, mahogany, walnut, and wenge, woods that cover a broad colour spectrum and create a clear contrast between light and dark squares. The deep black of many boards is achieved through ebonisation – an effective blackening technique.

With meticulous veneer work, the wood sheets are cut to the millimetre, bonded into a flawless chess pattern, and then finely sanded. Multiple layers of silky-matte lacquer protect the surface without hiding the natural grain. A solid core lends the board long-term stability, ensuring it retains its shape for decades and withstands even intensive tournament use.

Historical Development and the Staunton Standard

The standardisation of modern chess boards is closely linked to the introduction of Staunton pieces in 1849. Before then, neither board sizes nor piece designs were uniform. With the Staunton pattern, today’s accepted proportion gradually prevailed: a king of roughly 95 millimetres requires a square size of about 55 millimetres. In the 20th century, FIDE adopted these measurements as the tournament norm. Since then, wooden, silky-matte boards with two-tone squares have been fixtures of competitive chess.
